| Help Build the Burundi Batwa Pygmies a Dream Home! |
In the Western world when most of us think of our dream home, we envision various design, style, location and so much more. For the Burundi Batwa, a mud hut with a dirt floor is a dream come true. The Central African nation of Burundi is 1 of the 10 poorest nations in the world. It lies on the southern border of Rwanda; the 2 were once one country and it has similar poverty issues. The Twa are an indigenous people of Burundi and are the nation's outcast poor, making up 1-2% percent of the entire population. Very few are educated and when Andy visited last year, he was privileged to attend the graduation of one young Twa man. We hope to see many more in the near future! Families with multiple children live in grass or grass-mud huts with dirt floors that offer minimal protection from the elements. The huts are much smaller than the average modern family's living room, about the size of a 6 passenger minivan. This Project is to build mud brick houses for 71 of 83 families in the Busiga Region, plus a home for single men or women. Currently, utilizing local help by providing jobs, we can build 4 houses in 1 month. Other goals include building sanitation facilities (toilets). Of 20 total,16 are still needed for the Busiga Twa. $500.00 will build one house and also help to create a better, healthier life for an entire Twa family. $200.00 will build one toilet facility.
